NOC Engineer

On the IT/Operations side, we strive to keep NIM's operation running 24x7. You will work with the IT/Operations team to provide daily operational support to NIM and also help in enhancing the existing Network, processes and procedures.

As the “Network Operations Center Engineer” (NOC) you will offer technical resources to a team responsible for monitoring NIM’s production services and equipment. You must be willing to be on-call and available 24 hours a day, including weekends on a rotating schedule.

Responsibilities:

  • Act as first tier in alert response and incident/problem resolution, as well as in identifying production related incidents and issues.  This includes detection of system, application, or performance degradation or unavailability.  Also track the resolution of any system or application problems.
  • Monitoring of NIM’s NMS for faults and alerts, as well as enhancement/refinement of NMS to provide more insight into production.
  • Maintain production problem/issues log - on a daily basis a detailed log of any production related issues and incidents including their causes & resolutions. 
  • Acts as central point of contact for production related incidents & problems, including providing detailed and immediate notification and updates to key individuals/groups.
  • Detailed troubleshooting, deployment, migration, maintenance and administration of the following: Linux, Apache, PostgreSQL, HP and Dell servers, Cisco/Foundry/Juniper network devices.
  • Routine production activities, including posting of data-sets, running performance reports, managing backup jobs and archiving.
  • Documentation of network and server topology, as well as operating procedures. Monitoring of NIM ticketing system, as well triage and resolution of 1st tier requests (account creations, access requests, etc).

Qualifications:

  • 1 to 2 years experience with Linux, FreeBSD, or other UNIX
  • 1 to 2 years experience with MS Windows XP and Window Server 2003 operating systems preferred
  • 1 to 2 years experience with Apache and with UNIX services (DNS, NFS, Samba, SSH, etc)
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP and networking 
  • 1 to 2 years experience with SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) 
  • Hands-on experience with Networking Products (Cisco, Foundry, Juniper .
  • 1 to 2 years experience working within a datacenter environment. Knowledge of system monitoring and ticketing software.
  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to effectively handle concurrent projects
  • Good written and oral interdepartmental communication skills 
  • Ability and availability to be on-call 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule. 

A Plus

  • Web/HTML experience, and Python preferred
  • Firewall and router experience
  • UNIX or Cisco certifications a plus

Special Requirements

  • The NOC provides 24x7x365 coverage and the NOC Engineer may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. The ideal candidate will be willing to work a flexible schedule, including the off-shifts (2nd or 3rd shift).
